Orthodontist or Dentist

Understanding the different (and equally important) roles of dentists and orthodontists can be confusing. Both dentists and Specialist Orthodontists have undergone the same training to become certified dentists. Specialist Orthodontists have then gone on to multiple extra years of schooling to specialise in straightening smiles. Here is a chart to break down the similarities and differences between these two jobs in the field of dentistry.

You do not need a referral to visit a dentist or an orthodontist, but sometimes your dentist may give you a referral to a Specialist Orthodontist if they think you could benefit from orthodontic treatment. Similarly, a Specialist Orthodontist may refer you to a dentist if you need general dental work such as a filling or tooth extraction.

At Toowoomba Orthodontists we believe it is extremely important to continue with your regular dental cleaning appointments throughout orthodontic treatment. We are happy to work alongside your dentist to ensure that you have the most beautiful, healthy teeth possible.
